The Boxer

Shortly after 9/11, Paul Simon sang “The Boxer” on Saturday Night Live. Behind him were rows of firefighters and policemen, some of whom still had dust on their uniforms. For me at least it was a moment to release the emotions of the previous days. Somehow it’s the song that still manages to capture best my reaction to the killing of Osama Bin Laden – relief, sadness, a sense of what’s been wasted (“I have squandered my resistance for a pocketful of mumbles”), our own folly (“Still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest”), and of course our triumph, our spirit (“the fighter still remains”).
