I’ve been poking around trying to hear more by Benny Bailey and found this. Wow, a pretty inspired solo, both architecturally and in terms of soul. The whole thing is great, but he really shines. They take a little while to get all set – you can jump to 1:35, which is roughly where the tune starts.
Here’s part two, with another good solo from Bailey, this time with a plunger. Mingus takes a typically powerful solo, too. Kind of funny, because it seems that it wasn’t planned: the band appears to think that they’re supposed to collect for a reprisal of the theme, but Mingus asserts himself with some hard plucked notes, and his band retreats.
